Are you kidding me?

In my English class we have been talking about how more people are obese today than they were 50 years ago. We've read some really interesting articles on the topic but I want to mention one particular discussion our class had.

The conversation turned into how convenient it is for us to east fast food and how that may be the biggest culprit of obesity. Then one student, a mom no less, said her life was so busy that "the best thing" she could do for her daughter was to feed her fast food sometimes because her life was too busy and she didn't have time to cook.

Ok, first of all, my family does eat out, so I'm not totally against it. But, don't start telling me that it's society's fault that you are so busy and don't have time to cook. That's the way the conversation turned and a lot of students agreed. Are you kidding me?! Society doesn't twist our arms and say "YOU MUST EAT A CHICKEN MCNUGGET!" That's our choice and ours alone. It's our responsibility as parents to teach our children to make healthy choices.

Too busy to cook dinner? Give me a break. Sure, once in awhile I get "too busy" and so we eat out to save time but that's only because of my lack of better planning. I take responsibility for my actions as a parent and citizen. I would agree that society doesn't help the situation with all the advertising, but what and where we eat is still up to me. It's stupid to say otherwise IMO.

I hear you. I have recently realized that it's just as quick to whip up sandwiches or spaghetti as it is to drive to the nearby fast food restaurants. When I find myself wondering if I should go grab some fast food, it's usually because I a) don't know what to cook (here's where three minutes of menu planning on Mondays have changed my life) or b) I am too lazy to make anything.

Fast food is great as a treat every once in awhile, but if you're too busy to cook dinner most of the time, I'd say your priorities and perspective needs adjusting.

Maybe it will be different when my sons are older and headed to the soccer fields every night around dinnertime, but I'd like to think not.

I agree too. Nobody "makes" us have to eat fast food, it's a choice we make. All about priorities. If it's important for a person to make a homemade dinner for their kids they will make the time for it, even if it means spending a few hours of their day off to make some meals to put in the freezer for the week.

Amen! We eat out once or twice a month, tops. If you can't find time to make dinner for your family a few times a week, you are too busy!!!
