Is it just me?

For the first time, we went to the 3-5 year old story time at the library a few days ago. In the past we've gone to the 24 months and younger story time (Miss A is young enough for that one). With the younger class, the parents and other siblings were always welcomed. But for some reason, in the older class, no parents or other kids are allowed.

Now for a parent who loves to participate in story time with her children, I found this really strange and bothersome. Story time has always been an activity we did together and poor Miss A was so disappointed not to be able to go with her sister.

Well, I've been thinking about this and wondering why they do it. Yes, the children are older and some even school-aged. Yes, it's good for children to participate in things by themselves and interact with other children without a parent watching over them. But at the same time, it's story time for crying out loud, so what's the big deal?

Even though it happened a few days ago, I'm still bothered by this. I'm not mad or anything, it just seems silly. Is it just me or would anyone else care?

That does seem weird. I've never heard of a story time where parents aren't welcome.

They do the same thing at our storytime (when they have it, which is only for six-week periods four times a year, what is up with THAT). I hesitated putting L in the bigger class even though he does great in Sunbeams without me ... for him, I think he acts much more mature if I'm not with him. (Is that weird?)

I'm not really bothered by the separation except that I am CURIOUS as to what happens and how he reacts! When (if) I ever end up sending him in, I'll have to rig him up with spy equipment. ;-)

I think I would definitely ask what the deal is with that. Seems strange to me.

I've never come across a story time that they don't allow the parents to go to. That does seem a little strange.

I would guess it is to help the child get used to not being with their parent at all times since it is getting close to school age. Stuff like that never bothered me. I would ask them though for their specific reasoning on it.

Well in my experience some of my children just do better without me there. I notice that they sit and listen and are more attentinve without me or their little siblings running around distracting everyone. In a younger class that is more easily tolerated but in general older children/preschoolers are able to sit longer, without distractions of course.
